The town was granted its Market Status in 1214 by King John and it continues to hold a market to this day. Lutterworth other claim to fame is that Frank Whittle, the inventor of the jet engine, who developed some of the world first jet engines at the British Thomson-Houston works in Lutterworth and nearby Rugby during the late 1930s and 1940s. A statue plane stands in the middle of a roundabout just south of the town as a memorial.
